Patty got up to peer into the refrigerator. ?Honey, don?t look so guilty,? she said. ?Men are like horses. If they?re even-tempered and sweet, you stay on for the ride. If they buck and run around, you get off before you get hurt.? She slammed the refrigerator door. ?Damn, we?re out of cake.? --from Horseplay: A Novel

A debut novel full of sparkle and wit, Horseplay is a story of the animals that touch our hearts? and the men who try our souls.

When Judy Van Brunt finally decides to leave her cheating husband, she makes immediate plans to quit her teaching job, take the money she inherited from her mother, and run off, leaving a note on her husband's pillow. There is only one problem: Where is she going?

During her weekly riding lesson, her instructor makes a suggestion just crazy enough to work?and before she knows it, Judy has a position as a groom at an exclusive North Carolina horse farm. There, she shares an apartment with three remarkable women who also work at the farm, and she puts in long hours caring for the horses in addition to learning the demanding sport of dressage from the farm?s owner, a former Olympic champion. Exhausted but fulfilled, she learns for herself that a horse in the barn is worth far more than a husband at home. Her housemates gladly supplement her education with lessons not found in the riding ring, such as how to avoid the farm?s snootier patrons and weed out unsavory suitors. Her devotion to horses is far more rewarding than her marriage ever was?after all, horses never lie or cheat, and even the most hot-blooded stallion won't kick her when she's down.

Nevertheless, her new life doesn't keep her away from men entirely. She finds her early vow of chastity and cheeseburgers weakening as she is drawn to one especially eligible bachelor. But after a few escapades with studs of the two-legged variety, is she really ready to be with someone?

Set against the alternately glamorous and grimy world of competitive horse shows, Horseplay is a jubilant ride.

Great Read

For women only, this is a fun, funny book! Colorful characters. Lively plot. Don't miss it.

Light-hearted, uplifting and addictive

While I agree with some other reviewers in saying that elements of Horseplay are quite far-fetched and unrealistic, I must say that I haven't had this much fun reading a book in some time. The story is light and fun and the central characters are engaging and loveable, including some of the non-human ones (horses and Jack Russell terriers).
If you're in need of an uplifting, motivating and laugh-out-loud read, with some dressage thrown in for good measure, then you can't go wrong with this lovely, light-hearted read.

HILARIOUS ROMP

If you can't laugh and let your hair down, if all you read has to be "important" than this book is probably not for you. Horseplay is a hilarious romp through day to day stable situations. It's the story of a divorced woman leaving behind a cheating husband; a woman who reinvents herself and starts a new life in a different state, and a different state of mind. She hires on as a groom at a fancy show stable, takes a room over the barn, and struggles to learn dressage while mucking stalls and brushing horses. A side benefit is that she loses weight and becomes fit, and more attractive to the opposite sex. If you want to curl up with a glass of wine, an easy chair or a tub, and a funny book that will have you laughing out loud, this is it. Judy Reene Singer is a former high school English teacher with graduate degrees in psychology, and a rider herself--just about enough education to plumb the depths of a snobby show stable.

Horseplay in so many ways!!

This was another good book by Reene Singer. Some surprising twists and turns helped to keep you wanting to read more. A variety of characters...where anyone can relate to probably one of themself. Looking forward to another book by this auther.

LMAO Funny, charming and full of wit

Once I picked up Horseplay it was hard to put down. So hard that I actually finished it in one day. Not an easy to do feat for me since I do have a horse etc that are needing attention nearly all the time.
"Judy" was me just a mere 14 years ago. Although I was being screamed at in Finnish, not German. And the horses I was paired with were not anywhere near as hoity toity.
If you love Jennifer Cruse and you love horses. And you need a friend, or two that are just as crazy as you are. Read this book. Just make sure no one else needs you for a bit
