The true life of bizarre mountain man
John
Liver
-
Eating
Johnston
has finally been exposed! Did he eat human livers? Did he boil human heads? This fascinating biography tells all.
Amateur Work
This is an extremely amateurish and poorly organized biography which does little to draw the reader in. The author seems consistently more concerned with using his (and the readers) time to ham-handedly discredit a previous biography of
John
Johnston
, rather than focusing on telling the story of a very interesting historical character.
Bitterly Boring......:(
First let me say that this book is full of information. However, only about 20% of it is useful. The rest is meaningless conjecture. There's no doubt that "Crow Killer" is full of exaggerations, that's what makes it so fun to read, and why I read it in two days. Mclelland himself states that "Crow Killer" is listed under historical fiction.
All things aside, what's really going on is Mclellands bitterness. He read the "Crow Killer" and was taken in and intrigued by the image of a man that only exists in our dreams. All american men love reading these romantic tales about the West. We can travel back in time as if we were there. This is why I believe Mclelland is so bitter about "Crow Killer". He wanted to believe the stories were true (as did I). But in reality, who cares? I would recommend "Crow Killer" to everybody. I wouldn't recommend "The
Avenging
fury
of the
Plains
" to anyone. Want my copy?
I had to force myself to finish this book. I still don't understand the importance of the so called fake photo in this book. Looks like
john
ston to me. And again, who cares? I must say that Mclelland certainly did his research. I just don't see why Mclelland is so bitter with the authors of "Crow Killer".
Bottom line: If you want to read a great tale of the american west by two great authors, read "Crow Killer". If you then want to totally ruin the experience of reading this great tale, then read "The Avenging Fury of the Plains".
