New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate -- a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister -- and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.

An amazing story

Jodi Picoult immediately captures her readers' minds in My Sister's Keeper when 13 year old Anna Fitzgerald is conceived as a bone marrow match for her sister Kate, who is diagnosed with leukemia. Anna has to undergo countless procedures in order to help Kate stay alive. For thirteen years this process of having Anna be Kate's donor is successful, however at age 13 Anna suddenly decides she doesn't want to be a donor anymore. She hires Cambell Alexander, a local lawyer, to help her oppose her mother, father, brother, and dying sister. This complicated trial puts the whole family into shock and debate over whether or not Anna is old enough to make this decision. The suspenseful events, especially the court scene, will keep all readers around 13 years and older at the edge of their seats. It is a wonderful story told from a few of the characters' perspectives, which keeps it fast paced and hard to put down. The novel also raises many debatable ethical issues, making it great for a book club. It makes you think about this unique situation and what you would do if you were one of the characters. This New York Times bestseller is a heartfelt story of a family that's torn between keeping one of their daughters alive, and giving their other daughter the rights she deserves as a free human being. It's a beautiful story and it would be a mistake not to read it.

Amazing

This book is amazing.... The author captivates the readers attention in so many ways.... With this book expect the unexpected...its so thrilling that you can't put the book down... with this book you get it all drama, romance, mystery, ect... As a mother I was able to brainstorm and put myself in an uncomfortable position but that is what real life is all about....

My Sister's Keeper is a definite keeper!

This book and Keeping Faith are my two favorites by this remarkable author. Keep those stories coming about families, their problems, and their resolutions. This one had a gripping story with a fantastic twist. It was also the book that got me to buy most all of Ms. Picoult's works.

LOVED this book!!

I am an avid reader and this was my first Jodi Picoult book. I LOVED this book. I loved how she wrote each chapter from a diff character's perspective. The book was so well-written and captivating. I couldnt put it down. Even though its a long book (over 400 pgs) I read the last half for 5 hrs straight because I couldnt put it down!! I cant wait to read another book by her

controversial topic, complex issues in a good story, but ...

A baby is genetically planned and created so she (and parts of her body, from blood to bone marrow to kidney) can be used to save her sister with Keukemia.

After a few pages, I was hooked and could not put it down. Jodi Picolt has taken a very difficult topic. You couldn't help but struggle with the family. What is right and what is wrong? What is moral?

Although the story is pretty good, the book is also disappointing in a few aspects. Firstly, the six different narrators have almost the same voice. The way they talk is not much different. Secondly, although there is some interesting twist towards the end of the book, the ending is too neat and easy and a bit of a cliche, making it more or less predicable.

Overall, I am still recommending it as it provocks one's thoughts on controversial issues we are facing in this modern society.
