Roommates Bruno and Boots find obstacles in their way as they attempt to lead the Macdonald Hall Zucchini Warriors to a victorious football season and earn the reward of a new recreation center.

A Way of Life

"A Bruno and Boots Book" is such a poor description of this series. These books ought to be shelved under "Philosophy of Life" because Gord comes through time after time with lessons and truisms, but most of all, the man gives you something to hold on to. So open up "Zucchini Warriors" (probably his best work, I've read it literally 72 times) and cling to every word he gives you...this book is hope.

The Zucchini Review

This book is humorous and exciting at the same time making it a sure touchdown! It will most likely be easier to understand and will be more enjoyable if you are a fan of football and understand the rules. Being a football fan/player myself I understood the football parts. Basically, the story takes place when Bruno and Boots, two roomates, decide they want a rec hall for their school, but no one seems to want to pay the money for their idea. But when former Green Bay Packer great Hank the Tank Carson comes along and wants to start a football team at his former school, he is willing to buy a rec hall for his players... if they can manage to win. Unfortunately for the boys, and the school, Henry Carson is also the owner of Mr. Zucchini Sticks, the delicious fluffy fried zucchini sticks that he thinks everyone enjoys. Boy was he wrong. They take many twists and turns to find ways to win but never doubt Bruno Walton's creative ideas.
The only thing I didn't like about the book is that some parts of the story were completley random and had no effect on the outcome. One thing I especially liked was that not all the action was on the field, but most of the humor happened in the dorms and in the classroom. In my opinion, the best character was Bruno because he was funny, creative, and mischievous. Overall, I thought it was a very good book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys humor and Gordan Korman.

The Zucchini Warriors

This book is about a couple kids Bruno and Boots, that want a recreation hall where they can just relax, but instead they built a football stadium and the school doesn't even have a team. A professional football player that came to their school built the stadium and made them a deal. If they create a good football team, he'll make them the best rec. hall he can. Mr. Carson "Hank The Tank" had a food call Zucchini sticks and they tasted really horrible and no one wanted to eat them but they didn't want to hurt his feeling so they pretended to eat them and came up with all these ideas on how to get rid of it. What they would do was they'd flush it down the toilet get huge trash bags and leave it in the woods.

Boots wasn't doing that good as a quarterback and his team needed help so he had this girl named Cathy from across in the other school to dress up as their friend Elmer since she's shaped more like him and play for Boots since she was really good and they wouldn't let her play for the team. There also was this kid named Sidney. Sidney was a blabbermouth even if he promised not to say anything he would say it, and nobody wanted him around definitely when they were having a girl play for Boots, and throwing away the Zucchini sticks after being caught once because they made a horrible smell when they threw them out in the woods.

They wanted a design on how the rec. hall would look like so they had their friend Elmer draw a blueprint. After he was done they didn't like the idea, but his friend had these Hamsters that escaped the cage and they found the animal eating the Zucchini sticks and they had an idea to feed the Sticks to the Bush Hamsters.

After having Cathy play for them later on, they earned their Rec. hall by being really good, but they got caught throwing out Zucchini sticks and told Mr. Carson they didn't want to hurt his feelings, and also they told everyone at the game that Boots was letting Cathy play for him all along, because he thought the principal was being arrested, but he wasn't and he felt stupid after. After that the principal had a talk with them and told them cheating in unacceptable and then Mr. Carson walked in and said "I think that disqualification was dumb, but you guys showed me you played hard and good and I said that if you'd do that, you'd get a rec. hall so I'm going to make since the school is going to wind up making one anyway, I'll just make one with more stuff." The boys were really happy, but there was bad news. They had to clean up the huge mess on the football stadium but they were still happy they got their rec. hall. Then Bruno Called them over and said look! There's more than 4 bush hamsters now!

I liked this book because it was about 2 boys who wanted a rec. hall and they played on a football team to get it but they were bad so this girl helped them and made them better and at the same time they had to throw out those Zucchini sticks secretly at night and there was so many things happening that it was very interesting.

One thing I liked about this book when Boots and Bruno asked Elmer to hide when the games were going since Cathy was acting like Elmer while the game was going on. Then Elmer said "Fine, I'll do it but you'll never ask me for anything again if I do it, ok?" And Boots and Bruno said ok and signed a contract. Then later on when they had to clean the football field of all the Zucchini sticks he asked Elmer to help and Elmer said remember that contract? Then Boots was saying c'mon elm' that was 2 weeks ago. Then they Bruno called them and instead of 4 bush hamsters, there was many of them because they reproduced while eating the Zucchini sticks.

One thing the author could've done better was to explain how they acted when they were in the rec. hall and how it was built better. Other than that, I liked how the author wrote the book.

Just so-so

For me, this book is when the series starts to lose its magic and just seem like Korman is churning out more of the same. The characters and the writing are solid, if predictable, but the plot has too much emphasis on the struggling sports team of misfits, most notably a superstar girl player who must hide her gender as she racks up the wins for the team.

I'm just used to the Bruno and Boots series dishing up more original storylines, and I think that it was a good thing that Korman moved on to other characters when he did.

Korman remains a great writer who has a real knack for bringing out the humor in strange situations. However, in this particular book, everything just seems a little stale, especially the idea that Bruno and Boots continue to fear the Fish, even though after umpteen years of breaking the rules, his austere personality hasn't yet manifested itself in the form of severe consequences.

If you are a Bruno and Boots fan, by all means read this book, but if you're picking up this author for the first time, start at the beginning of this hilarious series and work your way through them chronologically.
