The Redeeming

Tain is learning to deal with the last 700 years of his life and his captivity. Especially the way it turned his thinking around and made him insane. However when things got very bad, Tain remembered that one woman risked it all to help him and his brothers. Now he has come to see her again, even it Tain doesn't want to admit that even to himself.

Samantha was raised human, but she is half demon and all cop. She is a member of the LAPD and has worked hard for her position. Back on duty after her time off to help out before, Samantha is working on a drug investigation in a demon club and hoping for a bust soon. That night Tain walks back into Samantha's life and immediately things start to happen.

What begins as a drug investigation quickly turns into much more including kidnapping, clan wars and murder. Samantha and Tain work together to discover who or what is behind everything, while trying to avoid the danger that is everywhere. Samantha's life is being turned upside down and her rock is Tain. He is beginning to show Samantha that being a demon isn't all that bad. Samantha and Tain both end up facing deadly foes and it's going to take all the love and trust they have to come out the other side alive.

The Redeeming is the long awaited story of Tain, the brother who was lost to the Immortals. Now back and mostly sane, Tain is trying to find out where he fits into today's world. Samantha would love to show Tain exactly where she wants him to fit in, but when her life is turned upside down, Samantha doesn't know how it will affect them. I have hoped for Tain's story ever since he was rescued and hoped that his ending was going to be a good one. I felt that both Tain and Samantha had things to learn and accept along the way, but the ending was all that I could have hoped for them. I was surprised when the dust settled on who exactly was behind the various parts of this investigation. The Redeeming is a must read for anyone who followed the previous four books in this series.

While not totally necessary, I would suggest reading the Immortals Series in order so that you can grasp all the plot points.

Popp or Joy Nash, these three writers have created something different to the usual supernatural stories. I don't think I want this series to finish! Write on, girls!

The tortured Immortal Tain's much awaited tale

Fifteen months prior Samantha Taylor, a half human - half demon witch and detective for the Paranormal division of the Los Angeles police force had helped to save the Immortal Tain from the sadistic clutches of one of her own kind, an Old One know as Kekhsut (THE GATHERING). In doing so she had helped to restore the balance between life and death magic in the world and fallen hopelessly in love with the half crazed Immortal. Unfortunately Tain had needed to restore his own balance and she had not seen him since that fateful day. In her heart she'd known that after what he'd suffered at the hand of the ancient demon that he'd never be able to tolerate the death magic that was a part of her. She'd left Seattle and had gone home to do what she did best, investigate crimes involving Paranormals.

Samantha's current assignment is as a decoy in a demon bar owned by Merrick a member of her father's demon clan. She hopes to charm the owner into revealing the club's use of Mindglow, an illegal demon date rape drug which left the demon's victims pliable and unable to resist the stealing of their life essence. Unfortunately just when she is certain that success is imminent, the club is stormed by demons of a warring clan and a seemly harmless derelict rises to the challenge -- Tain! It's no secret that Tain hates demons and not certain if he would bother to make a distinction between the good guys and the bad, she jumps into the fray.

Something deeper than date crime is going on in the demon world and there are those among the human kind who want revenge for the events of the previous year. Samantha and Tain both know that balance needs to be maintained or the world would be unmade. Young demon prostitutes are being brutally murdered, their hearts ripped out and sent back to their clans. The victims' clans are blaming each other. If the crimes cannot be solved a demon war is imminent. This new investigation exposes Samantha to both life and death magic extremists, the head of the Lamiah demon clan (her paternal great-grandmother) and Mrs. Townsend leader of the No More Nightmares group who endorses death to all death magic creatures.

Tain discovers portals to a demon realm in both the Lamiah Matriarch's home and a location used by the No More Nightmare's group and believes the demon hearts are being used as a sacrifice to attract another Old One, Bahkat. The deaths haven't stopped with the prostitutes and when the highest ranking Lamiah demon is found murdered as well as Mrs. Townsend's assistant, damning evidence surfaces that points to Tain as the culprit. There's no question that Samantha loves Tain with all her heart but can she trust him or has his mind been so twisted that his view of demons will always be warped? But if he's been set up, then she has bigger problems -- because then Tain was in big trouble and she was the bait! The whole thing is further complicated when Samantha is put up for the new leader of her father's clan and she must decide whether to right their world and lose the man she loves, or walk away leaving them in chaos to have him. Will Tain at long last find his redemption?

Poor Tain, it was too much to hope that his trials had ended with Kehksut's death. But have no fear, as always love will win the day. The young half Sidhe Immortal Mac, who we first met in THE AWAKENING, is the next to find love in THE CROSSING. Wondering about Samantha's mysterious werewolf partner Logan? It looks like we'll finally have his story, Jennifer Ashley's "Wolf Hunt" novella. in THE RECKONING anthology. Tain's story was well worth the wait, and I recommend strongly that you read the first four novels that lead up to THE REDEEMING first. Fifth in series

The previous books in this series have focused on one each of five immortal brothers who battle evil forces in a world in which demons, vampires and werewolves are recognised by the general population. The brother Tain has featured in several of these books as the brother who was captured by an evil demon and tortured for 700 years before finally being rescued.

Tain is on the brink of madness, struggling to recover from the traumas he faced, and in this latest book we follow his experiences as he connects again with the half-demon Samantha. Sam is a cop who had a part to play in the destruction of Tain's captor and who attracts Tain but he fears his madness and finds it hard to be around her.

Sam is investigating some demon murders when she comes across Tain again. He's incredibly powerful and yet gentle with her. As Sam finds herself drawn into demon politics and relying on some unexpected allies she and Tain must work together to prevent more evil.

This book is very akin to others in the series with the same strengths and weaknesses. Despite much navel gazing about Tain's past I never really felt I had a convincing insight into his character, and Sam's was sketchy too. The strong point of the story was the way that Sam learned about the demon world and her place in it with unfolding politics and possible new allies. The book was interesting but hardly broke new ground and felt perhaps a little unengaging.
