With revised material and new exercises based on ArcGIS version 9, this updated work acquaints geographers and GIS professionals with the principles of GIS as it teaches the mechanics of using ArcGIS software. Conceptual material is followed by scripted software exercises. Necessary GIS skills are presented in a variety of areas--map symbology, data overlay, map projection, and data conversion--as the making of maps and the analysis of geographic data is conceptualized. Spatial modeling exercises using the Model Builder technology of ArcGIS version 9 are also provided. A nice, basic GIS primer with ArcGIS software included

I teach an introductory GIS course using this book. I like the simple, informative layout and the exercises that are useful, if a little basic. One of the real values of the book is the inclusion of a trial version of ArcGIS 9.2 with a full gamut of extensions (there is a newer book out with 9.3), as well as exercises that go along with the book.

This in itself is very valuable, because it allows my students to use the state of the art software during the course on their personal computers. Unless you have access to ArcGIS from another source, I would highly recommend purchasing the book new, since the trial software is one-time use only.

Good book

I bought this book for a class but it is self explanatory if you are looking to learn more about GIS on your own. Make sure you buy it new otherwise the cd software for ArcGIS could be past the 180 day expiration date. Overall, a good book to have as a resource to learn more about what GIS can do for you. The seller also sent it in excellent condition and a timely manner.

This is a guide and workbook with a 6-month evaluation copy of ESRI's ArcView geographic information software (GIS). "Getting to Know ArcGIS" gives you 20 lessons and about 60 exercises to do in order to familiarize yourself with one of the leading GIS packages. It includes descriptive and explanatory text, and an abundance of graphics, including screen shots of prompts, options, tables and examples of maps that the exercises produce. With full-featured software included, you can replicate, or go beyond the text's exercises, with the sample data or your own data. It is well-written, easy to follow, and a good place to begin with GIS. The inclusion of the evaluation software makes this an especially good purchase.

Good primer for ArcGIS

I used this book for an online GIS course through the University of Washington and found the contents to be very helpful. The step-by-step process is instructive and helps to gain an understanding of the basic functions of ArcGIS.

Conversely, there are times when the book does not give enough detail to allow for troubleshooting. I found there were situations that arose in certain processes that the book did not cover, even though I was following the step-by-step process.
