Israel's hippest bestselling young writer today, Etgar Keret is part court jester, part literary crown prince, part national conscience. The
Bus
Driver
Who
Wanted
to Be
God
gathers his daring and provocative short
stories
for the first time in English.Brief, intense, painfully funny, and shockingly honest, Keret's stories are snapshots that illuminate with intelligence and wit the hidden truths of life. As with the best comic authors, hilarity and anguish are the twin pillars of his work. Keret covers a remarkable emotional and narrative terrain-from a father's first lesson to his boy to a standoff between soldiers caught in the Middle East conflict to a slice of life where nothing much happens. Bus Driver includes stories from Keret's bestselling collections in Israel, Pipelines and Missing Kissinger, as well as Keret's major new novella, "Kneller's Happy Campers," a bitingly satirical yet wistful road trip set in the afterlife for suicides.

Wonderful collection of strange little stories!
I have to admit I had not heard much about Etgar Keret until I saw the Wristcutters film. That inspired to read up on him and I ended up purchasing this book. I would be lying if I said I didn't find several of these
stories
very peculiar, but I would also be lying if I said I wasn't hooked from the very first short story! The novel makes for a beautiful collection of well-written gems, some of which are absolutely wonderful! I will certainly read it again and needless to say I am very happy with my purchase.
really good.
i love etgar keret. and i love this book. everyone should read it. its great. great. great. great. great.
short
stories
. around 3 - 4 pages in length. great meanings. just gives you a good/strange feeling after reading them. mostly tragedy, but some comedy. even if you've only got 5 minutes to read, you can get through at least one story.

Entertaining Short Stories
You can truly appreciate this author's cleverness. One or two short
stories
before bed is perfect. You will remember every individual short story on its own that how well written these are. It's fun, Imaginative and smart. Truly original and inspiring.
Pleasant spin
The simplicity of Keret's writing makes these short
stories
easy to read. And they are short. Seriously short; as in two or three pages. And within these few paragraph Keret makes such immediate and unexpected turns, it almost made me dizzy, and always left me thinking.
I got this book after seeing the movie Wristcutters, which soon became one of my favorites. The last story in this collection is the basis for the film adaptation, and the only difference between this and the movie was that the brevity of speech in the book voiced more angst than what came across in the
other
. All of the stories have a very youthful element, from the characters age, to the situations, to their reactions.
All in all I was pleased with this find. It was not a particularly affecting book, but I certainly plan on looking into Keret other works after this experience.

Hit or Miss
First off, I bought this book because I watched the movie wristcutters and
wanted
to read the story.
Some of the
stories
in this anthology are really interesting, some leave you wondering what the hell just happened. Personally, I like Kneller's Happy Campers the best, as well as some of his stories on the same theme like Pipes. It was definitely a different kind of book.
"There are two kinds of people, those
who
like to sleep next to the wall, and those who like to sleep next to the people who push them off the bed." ~Missing Kissinger
