A tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. For millions of years, humans have been seeking out tribes, be they religious, ethnic, economic, political, or even musical (think of the Deadheads). It?s our nature.

Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger. But more important, they?re enabling countless new tribes to be born?groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming.

And so the key question: Who is going to lead us?

The Web can do amazing things, but it can?t provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals? people just like you who have passion about something. The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips.

If you think leadership is for other people, think again?leaders come in surprising packages. Consider Joel Spolsky and his international tribe of scary-smart software engineers. Or Gary Vaynerhuck, a wine expert with a devoted following of enthusiasts. Chris Sharma leads a tribe of rock climbers up impossible cliff faces, while Mich Mathews, a VP at Microsoft, runs her internal tribe of marketers from her cube in Seattle. All they have in common is the desire to change things, the ability to connect a tribe, and the willingness to lead.

If you ignore this opportunity, you risk turning into a ?sheepwalker??someone who fights to protect the status quo at all costs, never asking if obedience is doing you (or your organization) any good. Sheepwalkers don?t do very well these days.

Tribes will make you think (really think) about the opportunities in leading your fellow employees, customers, investors, believers, hobbyists, or readers. . . . It?s not easy, but it?s easier than you think.

Vintage Seth

With his trademark spare yet powerful style, Seth Godin gives us a nice snapshot of what we knew but never took the time to categorize. "Tribes" are happening all around us. And everyone can participate. The book is an easy read packed with things that will make you (and us) consider how to lead where passion and good ideas inspire.

How was your day? A Review of "Tribes"

In his new book "Tribes" Seth Godin the marketing guru gives way to Seth Godin the life coach. In this thoroughly engaging book, Seth urges us to live a life of purpose, to become leaders, and to throw ourselves wholeheartedly to the pursuit of our dreams.

He builds upon the premises laid out in his previous books to underscore the fact that traditional interruption marketing doesn't work any more, and that business models based on hierarchical organizations, top down marketing messages and large advertising budgets are a thing of the past.

What this means is good news for you. Seth gives us example after example of how the Internet is allowing ordinary people to speak out, get noticed and connect with each other, in a way and scale that was simply unthinkable even a decade ago.

Blogs are free and can be set up in minutes. People (your tribe) can start following you by just clicking on the RSS icon. Tools like Twitter and Facebook make building communities of like-minded people a snap. If you can't find a publisher for your book, you can publish it yourself. All the barriers to entry that could have served as a valid excuse years ago no longer apply.

But tools mean nothing if we are not willing to use them to effect change. To make sure we get the point, Seth doesn't spare nudges. One that I found particularly powerful is this (paraphrasing): instead of taking two weeks off so that you can forget the other fifty, wouldn't it make more sense to design a life that you don't have to escape from? How do you react when someone asks you: how was your day?

If the answer is anything but `great', if you're stuck facing a dead end in your career, or if you are afraid to take the first step and start leading, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of Tribes.

Very Important Book

About 100,000 year ago, we lived in bands. Only about 10,000 years back did we evolve into tribes. After tribes came chiefdoms, then states and empires finally arriving at the current nations. With that said, I do agree with the author that a tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. Our human nature dictates that we must do this.

The internet has certainly eliminated and/or reduced the concept of geography and time while expanding the size of our tribes. With this expansion comes the natural flow of countless new tribes branching off into a myriad of directions. The reasons for thousands of years was usually food production and population growth. Too little food - too many people - new tribe. A tribe would also split because large tribes are hard to control, that is, large numbers lack behavior control. Nowadays, the game has changed.

The author has written a very timely and much needed book on how this new world will work and who will lead us. The change has happened in such a rapid manner and is such a profound part of our hierarchical society that I have great fears about the outcome. That is why this book and I hope the ensuing conversation it creates, will benefit us all

In order to live in complex social groups, it has been theorized that we need more memory and mental power in order to keep track of the relationships and social hierarchies that arise. This book is a good place to start.

I hope you found this review helpful. Michael L. Gooch, Author of Wingtips with Spurs: Cowboy Wisdom for Today's Business Leaders.

Tribes Makes You Want To Be A Leader

This book is dense

While reading, I felt the huge amount of observation, deep thought, and the tedious work that Seth Godin condensed into this little, tiny book.

The book might be tiny in format, but like the matter of a neutron star, it's heavy. Really heavy stuff that weighs a lot more than you probably can imagine. At the same time Tribes is fun and inspiring, and it's a quick read, too.

What Seth wrote sticks

It might take a second read to sink in, but it will stick. He is a reporter telling you about so many people, who "made it big" by leading a tribe. A tribe is essentially a group of people with a shared interest. A group of people waiting to be lead, waiting to be connected to each other. Leading a tribe is a proven way of marketing. In an age where attention has become so scarce leading your tribe might soon be the only way of doing marketing successfully.

New Internet technologies, like Twitter and Facebook make it easier than ever before to connect people and to grow your tribe. You can publish a blog within minutes at no cost and geographic boundaries, don't have the same meaning anymore than they used to have 10 years ago.

Become a Leader

Leading your tribe might not always been easy, but it is easier than you think. And you will learn so much on your way leaving the status quo behind. And you will be rewarded.

It does not matter in which industry you are working, what education you have,... All you need to do is say, "YES", say it loud and say it often.

This book is not only meant for you, it might also become the most precious gift that you have ever given to a friend, a colleague or your boss. They will be thankful for it. Forever.

Yours
John W. Furst

All of these reviews were written by the same person/people

I haven't read the book (yet), but you can tell from the style and editing details of 18 or 20 of the 23 reviews under this book that they were written by the same people. This may be a great book, but as always with Amazon, read reviews off Amazon (and on) before you spend your cash. I do plan to read this book, because I'm interested in the topic, but I couldn't let this obvious abuse of Amazon's reviews go un-noticed.
