Aleister Crowley?s ascension into the pantheon of alternative gurus was cemented by his appearance on The Beatles? Sgt. Pepper?s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. Unfortunately, he was known more for his reputation as "The Beast 666" and "The Wickedest Man in the World." All well and good for publicity, but this infamy eclipsed his teachings, as did his technical and opaque writing style, meant more for adepts contemporary to him than the average modern reader. Enter Lon Milo DuQuette to decipher and explain Crowley?s texts and more important rituals. The Magick of Aleister Crowley is a clear introduction to the works of Crowley by a modern master of the occult and one of the wittiest writers in the field. DuQuette takes the mystery out of both the rituals themselves and Crowley?s writing in this modern grimoire. Step by step, he presents a course of study in plain English, with examples of rituals and explanations of their significance. DuQuette also includes a course of study for Crowley?s original works with an extensive bibliography and fastidious footnotes.

Formerly titled The Magick of Thelema, this revised edition features extensive corrections, a new introduction, and a new ritual, "The Rites of Eleusis."

This is the perfect introductory text for readers who wonder what the works?rather than the myth?of Aleister Crowley are all about.

Good, but overlooks information

This is good, coherent, introduction, but like virtually all books available in the United States having to do with Aleister Crowley and Thelema it leaves out conflicting views from Britain. Duqette ignores what could be vital interpretations about parts of Thelema provided by Kenneth Grant, in particular the discussion of what ShT means in the LaShTAl formula. Besides not even mentioning that a substantial amount of information, and several organizations that are Thelemic, exist beyond the 'Caliphate' O.T.O., the legally recognized one in the U.S., and the A .'. A.'. it simply glosses over parts that aren't suitable, like not discussing the symbolism of Khepra, the sun at midnight in Egyptian theology, which Grant's and other organizations, particularly the Temple of Set, have a lot to say about.

Also, it sticks to an overly restrictive version of what the 'Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel' is. Crowley definitively identified this entity with the Silent Self, while the stuff coming out of the Caliphate (see Peter Koenig's webpage for a definition on this term) stresses the Abramelin operation, which actually goes in the opposite direction, besides being virtually impossible to do.

That said, it provides a good basis for beginners, but don't be fooled by the siren song of simplified American Thelema. It's strangely fortunate that the dissident books aren't widely available in the U.S., isn't it?

I like this..

This is good. Lon Milo talks to youHey!..like he's your Bud.. and Makes Crowely's life coMe alive On eAch aNd eVery Page..RAndAll PikE wAnts to write a book about Crowely so we'll see..But Crowely biographies are supposedly steeped in so much arcane and hard to understand languagE. Who WAS this man? I also reccommend "The Illustrated Beast" by Sandy RObertson. Hope you all find your way to this mysterious man, who Lon knows wEll from study with correct Golden Dawn heritage lineages..If there's such a thiNg. Lon is quite a fair man, and Sandy Robertson's book should supplemenNT this..
