Great Hungarian Historic Marches

This spendid CD chronicles Hungarian martial music from the early to mid-19th century. The instrumentation reflects the growth of the military band during this period, as well as the changing nature of Hungarian martial music. The earlier works reflect the smaller military band of the Austro-Hungarian army and are quite fascinating. The later pieces reflect a stronger nationalistic feeling as we move toward the Koussoth rebellion of 1848 which nearly shock the Hapsburgs to their core. These later marches are spendid, passionate pieces, quite unique in tone and character. They represent a distinct genre of military band or wind music that is not well known in the English speaking world. To listen to this CD not only tells you something about the past nationalistic yearnings of Hungaria, but also reflects upon the growth of the military band. The linear notes are quite good and informative, although they suffer sometimes from the translation. Still, this is a most fascinating CD for any student of military music, or those who enjoy exciting, interesting wind band sounds.
