This slam-bang, take-no-prisoners account of the
Paganini
Caprices
is just the thing for a rainy day. Considered the last word in virtuoso violin technique when they were composed--and still quite a challenge today--these delightful miniatures each get played to the hilt by Perlman, reveling in their technical intricacies while also making the most of their lively charm and musicality. This is simply one of the best solo violin recordings available, and it belongs on any Perlman fan's shortlist. --David Hurwitz

Fabulous Perlman
I'm not going to be a purist on recordings of these pieces. I know Perlman as one of the great violin players of our time, and he certainly does not disappoint his audience on this CD. I still wonder how on earth anyone is capable of producing such music from a simple violin, be it composer or performer. Breathtaking - technically but also artistically.
Must Have for Everyone Who Loves Music!

Paganini
not only wrote extremely fast and intricate music, but even his "mellower" stuff is phenomenal! Itzhak does a wonderful job on all 24

Perlman is brilliant on this Paganini set
I've been fortunate enough to own most of the performances of
Paganini
's 24
Caprices
for Solo Violin that are frequently mentioned as the best sets available, and for me, this cd by Itzhak Perlman from EMI's Great Recordings of the Century is the clear first choice to add to any classical music library. The playing is technically brilliant, full of passion & fire, and the recording is top notch. No other performance I've heard quite matches this one for all the elements one would want in a great compact disc of these pieces. The James Ehnes offering on Telarc is stunningly played, but he lacks Perlman's artistic passion, and the recorded sound is just a bit abrasive. Midori gives a wonderful performance (a close second to this disc) as well, but she lacks, to a very small degree, Perlman's fire. Salvatore Accardo is legendary in the Paganini caprices, but I find the sound of his DG recording to lack the pristine brilliance of this Perlman set from EMI. When I carefully consider all the angles in recommending a fine performance of Niccolo Paganini's 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, I always find myself returning to this Izhak Pelman release. If I could only own one disc of these spellbinding violin works, this would be the one I would keep.
