A man buys a Mogwai as a Christmas present for his son. The young boy is told to keep the pet away from water, out of the light and never to feed it after midnight. Inadvertently, the creature is dampened and almost instantly, produces half a dozen furry replicas of itself --which continue to multiply and turn the small town upside-down.
A Cute, Classic Film!
I ordered this DVD for my son who, even at 17 enjoyed it. It's become a classic film, combining just the right mix of cute, cuddly fun, comedy and horror that appeals to many viewers.
Gremlins
GREMLINS
is another indisputable classic, and is easily the greatest of any of the small creature films to date. While most of the film is lighthearted and fun, much of it is still very frightening thanks to the sinister creature designs by Chris Walas. The trouble starts when a father brings a unique furry creature home to his son for Christmas. The Mogwai arrives with several warnings, and when Billy mistakenly breaks the rules, his new pet's offspring transform into the mischievous and evil Gremlins that are bent on murder and mayhem! Not only are the Gremlins on of the most memorable designs of any movie creatures to date, but Walas brings the critters to life with unmatched animatronics and puppetry that makes them indistinguishable from living monsters. Director Joe Dante draws equally from genre influences like INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS as much as from the Warner classics like Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies, combining silly gags with paranoia and violence in a live-action cartoon. The plot and pace are perfectly timed to build genuine suspense while slowly revealing the creatures and their sinister nature. While the creatures are entirely scary in their own right, some of the darker tones that the film builds on involve the loneliness and despair that often come with the holidays. When you add the unforgettable characters and score to each of the other successful elements of the film, it is impossible to rate this staple 80s holiday Horror film as anything less than perfect.

TWISTED FUN
Joe Dante did an excellent job of juggling the cute, absurd, horrific, and dark humor in this exceptional, not-for-young-kids creature-fest. The acting was decent, but the satire, and witty dialogue ( courtesy of Chris Columbus ) are what really make
GREMLINS
such a sweet treat.
the extras are merely adequate, but the film itself is a must have.
