Anna Lutz Abbot thinks she has her independence, and therefore her happiness, intact. She is a capable woman, a sensible woman, not someone given to risky living.

This all seems to be true enough until her lovely daughter returns from college for the summer a very different person, her wild and wonderful ex-husband arrives, and her flamboyant new best friend takes up with her daddy, turning a hot summer into a steaming one--only to be cranked up another ten degrees by Anna's own fling with Arthur, who is, heaven help us, a Yankee. All the action unfolds under the watchful eyes of Miss Mavis and Miss Angel, her next-door neighbors of a certain age, who have plenty to say about Anna's past, present, and future.

A bit long..

for me but enjoyed none the less. Who can't help but love a book about a woman, mother, single who decides she needs a place of her own. Scary as it may be. One day something happens at the hair salon she works at, employed for a big meany, Harriet, and Harriet instead of thanking her, fires her. So now she has a mortage to pay for, and no job. Her quacky next door neighbor has a crazy idea. Start your own salon. In fact, the quirky neighbor gives her money for it, as a loan.

Her daughter comes to the new home, but is acting very different. Will they have a summer of peace? Will the new salon make it? Will our heroine find love, independence and peace herself?

This book was awesome in the way it was written. Brilliant! I really loved the writing style. It was a tad long for me, but still enjoyable!

Was confused at the end....

This was my first time reading Frank and I do have to say I loved her conversational, breezy, style of writing.
Have to agree with some other reviews here though...toward the end, the story seemed to drag and some of the dialogue wasn't realistic.
BUT what really got me was, I got confused on the Epilogue...it was about a wedding for somebody named "Susan." I had to stop and say, "Wait a sec! WHO is Susan?" I honestly do not remember this character in the story. Her best friend was Franni, neighbor was Lucy, etc. I just didn't understand why the author chose to tell us readers about a wedding with this Susan, when Susan played a very insignificant part in the entire novel. If it were Franni's wedding, I'd certainly have understood. So just call me confused.
I will, however, get to the library to now read Sullivan's Island and then possibly more of her books.

Isle of Palms......My favorite place on earth

(Short and sweet review). You have to read this book if you've ever been to the Isle of Palms. The characters are entertaining and you feel like you are there, too. I enjoyed this one.

Isle of Palms

Not my favorite book of Dorthea's. I stuggled to finish it as it sort of drug on. Not a believable story, but entertaining anyway.
