From acclaimed writer Andrew Davies (BBC?s Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth) comes this enchanting new adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel about love and marriage. Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve when she falls in love with the charming but unsuitable John Willoughby ignoring her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behavior leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Elinor sensitive to social convention struggles to conceal her own romantic disappointment even from those closest to her. Will the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love?Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/BBC UPC: 883929006007 Manufacturer No: 1000036359

Beautiful! Glorious! Wonderful! Great! A Masterpiece Surpassing The Original Source!

This is a film to stare at as well as watch and contemplate. The sheer beauty of the setting, of the scenes, of its human cast transcends the ordinary as all art should and too rarely does. This is the definitive version, despite what purists may maintain, and which I respectfully allow they are more than welcome to maintain. Buy this DVD if you ever want to buy any DVD of Miss Austen's works.

(And, oh, yeah, the included Miss Austen Regrets was superbly done, too!)

Great film

I had been enamored of the Emma Thompson version of this Jane Austen story, at least until I saw the BBC version. This version is so much more true to the feelings of the book. The music is glorious, the photography lovely, and the acting is passionate and sensitive. This is now my favorite version.

Wowza.

This is awesome. Its a difficult novel to get right on the screen because there are so any levels to it and personalities hiding behind the stiff upper lips - but this version just has the right "finish". I've already watched it twice within 2 weeks. This is a great one to watch again and again and again and...

Best Interpretation Yet

I have enjoyed many of Jane Austen's period pieces and novels; they are rich in history and in reminding us all of the beauty of the human relationship. This version of Sense and Sensibility is simply the best I've seen bar none. The acting is superb and it is quick to absorb oneself in the human drama. However, one other element makes this series superior: the music. It is moving and in a heartbeat sweeps you into Barton Cottage and each key moment of this drama and romance. This is a series worth owning.

no regrets about S&S

A die-hard Austen fan, I had doubts about getting involved with anything other than the tried-and-true Emma Thompson version. But I have to admit that I liked this version even better! The actresses are of believable ages and despite being fresh out of theatre school, do remarkable jobs as Elinor and Marianne - especially Hattie Morahan in the role of Elinor.
The sets and costumes are lovely - my only complaint might be that sometimes they seem to echo the previous version a little too well. But the details are so realistic and charming that I can easily forgive the filmmakers that.
Be prepared for some additional scenes, which might go against purists, but in my opinion add a much-needed scope to the entire work. These include conversations between Brandon and Sir John Middleton and a rather blistering encounter between Willoughby and Brandon over the pregnancy of Brandon's ward.

The accompanying Miss Austen Regrets was unexpectedly touching and so much better than Becoming Jane's meagre excuse for any biographical content.

I fully recommend this set for anyone who loves Jane Austen, period dramas, or just plain good romances - you won't have any regrets.
