This HDMI to VGA HD15 (Male) connects your HDMI-equipped device, HDTV (NOT FROM COMPUTER OR LAPTOP) to your monitor. The HDMI-equipped devices include high-definition DVD player, HDTV receiver, projector, A/V receiver, Playstation system. The cable supports high-definition resolutions up to 1080p, provides the highest quality picture and clear sound.

I bought this to use my PS3 on my PC monitor, but it does not work, why?
Because the PS3 is designed to not give out a single if the device does no have HDCP.
Which basically means that if the receiving device does not offer protection for the signal that it gets it wont give a signal.

Some form of copyright protection. I ended up using a VGA box which worked fine but you can probably sell your current one and add some cash and get a very decent new monitor with HDMI input.

Waste of money especially if HDMI output uses HDCP

You would be wrong if you thought this cable let you display HDMI output from some device (DVR maybe?) on a VGA monitor. You would also be out $14 plus about $6 shipping. But it's a small price for some education. The first tip-off is that the only sellers are using Amazon's used/new marketplace, which is different than, say, Amazon itself, and the second tip-off is that the product description says the sound quality is great. Who knew that VGA carried sound?

Perhaps the FAIL only occurs when the HDMI output uses HDCP (copy protection), which is the case for most DVD players, HDTV receivers, DVRs, etc.
