Luncheon of the Boating Party Susan Vreeland
Penguin (Non-Classics), 2008
Best Book Ever!
+ Pleasant Diversion + In love with this book
This was one of the best books I've ever read. With all that France has had to endure, the French people are celebrated here through art, food and the love of the outdoors. Ms. Vreeland did an excellent job researching her subject. If you are not an avid art lover or Impressionist fan, you will be ...

The Other David Guterson
Knopf, 2008
Melancholy "madness"
+ Engaging at multiple levels, but not for everyone + Great Story and Detail
This is a really good book, by the author of the really good "Snow Falling on Cedars" and the not so good "Our Lady of the Forest" (well, at least I didn't enjoy that one). Middle-class Neil Countryman narrates the tale of his friendship with John William Barry, a young man to the manor born who ...

The House at Riverton: A Novel Kate Morton
Atria, 2008
Couldn't Put it Down!!
+ Enchanting Fiction + The House at Riverton
I loved this book!! Morton told a great story and I felt transported to another time and place. I have always enjoyed this genre of fiction and Morton does not disappoint. I couldn't put it down. Some of the plot twists were predictable but some were not. I also read the Thirteenth Tale that ...

This book will stay with you for a long time . . .
+ The Story of Edgar Sawtelle + Edgar Sawtelle
I first read this book a few months ago and thought it was amazing. I intended to write a review then, but could not really find the words to capture the essence of this novel in this forum. When I saw how hyped the novel has become and the more recent reviews, I decided to read it again (no ...

The Garden of Last Days: A Novel Andre Dubus III
W. W. Norton, 2008
WORTH THE WAIT!!!!
+ A gripping, tense story evolves with many unexpected twists and turns
After reading the House of the Sand and Fog, I was worried that the author could not possibly live up to this masterpiece. And he absolutely has. As with Sand and Fog, I simply could not stop reading this book. The characters were, in equal measures, likeable and contemptible and completely ...

Lush Life: A Novel Richard Price
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008
The Price is Right
+ TOUCHING THE LOST SOULS
Richard Price is as good of a dialogue writer as exists today in my mind. "Lush Life" is his latest novel that brilliantly showcases his skills and keen knowledge and insights of city life, particularly NYC life.
Other reviewers have already covered the plot so I won't spend my commentary ...

I loved this book. It was extremely interesting and definitely caught my interest, as I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it. I loved the story and it kept me on edge throughout the book and I had to keep reading it to find out what happened at the end. It was very moving and I ...

Change of Heart: A Novel Jodi Picoult
Atria, 2008
excellent book
+ Overall solid Picoult
This is one of the best books I have read. It reminds me of The Green Mile. She tells this story from different viewpoints. She includes ideas from a rabbi, a priest and the gnostic scriptures. Her characters are well developed and believable. I loved this book and did not want it to end.
